The result of this pseudo-one-piece design is an incredibly top-heavy kit, which unfortunately is paired with an inordinately unstable stand. The drum pads are surrounded by a significant amount of seemingly superfluous plastic, which is angled upwards and houses the control pod and cymbal mounts. The kick pedal almost makes buying the Guitar Hero World Tour kit over its first-party competitors worthwhile, however, there were two crucial aspects of the design and construction of the kit that we just couldn't overlook its bulky drum pad base and unstable stand. Secondly, a downward mounted hammer must make contact with a sensor built into the base of the pedal for a kick to be detected by the game.

For starters, the Guitar Hero World Tour pedal uses a far denser and resistant coil than that of Rock Band or Rock Band 2. While the plastic build materials are no more sturdy than any other competing models, the design of the depression mechanism is far more apt for withstanding forceful kick drum fills. Perhaps the biggest redeeming factor of the Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit is its kick pedal, which is incredibly well built and sturdy for a stock drum controller pedal. Perhaps its our significant lack of skill, but as a result of the low-clearance cymbals, we too often found ourselves hitting the bottom of the cymbal on the way back up from a strike with our stick. The cymbals are raised to a maximum height of about 6", and just slightly out of the direct downward range of the drum pads. A lever built-into the base of the kit allows users to extend the cymbals to a less-than-preferred clearance above the drum pads. The mounts are constructed from a combination of flimsy plastic and flimsy metal, which combine to form a, as you may have guessed, flimsy locking mechanism. The cymbals themselves are more or less impervious to unreasonable abuse, but the mounts are a different story. Instead of resting upon a springy mounting mechanism, the cymbals are attached to extendable plastic mounts. The cymbals are crafted from practically the same type of rubber, but are distinguishable by the manner in which they are mounted to the base of the kit. To the average player on the other hand, the Guitar Hero World Tour's stiff pads may be more work than they are worth.Īs for the cymbal attachments, they share a similarly rigid design to the snare and toms pads. To some, particularly to experienced percussionists or the otherwise rhythmically-inclined this aspect of the design may be a much-appreciated step toward authenticity.

However, much like their real-life counterparts, the snare and tom pads must be stuck with significant force to get the full sound of the instrument. The result is more realistic and effective drum rolls that can be executed with ease. The snare and two tom pads feature a dense, absorbent rubber-like material that quiets each strike of a drum stick, and repels it in a form comparable to a real-life drum kit.

In fact, one of the kit's most appealing design features is also one of the biggest obstacles for accurate in-game replication-its soft drum pads. While we'll leave detailed in-game response praise and criticism to our full Guitar Hero World Tour review, we can say that there are several physical aspects of the drum kit's design that make its responsiveness less-than-optimal. Each pad and cymbal is velocity sensitive, meaning that the harder you hit it the louder and more differential the tones become. While the Rock Band drum kit opted for a more conventional four-pad arrangement, the Guitar Hero kit utilizes three pads and two cymbals. The Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit delineates itself from its competitor's version in several key regards, primarily in its arrangement and construction. We've had ample time with the Rock Band kit, but now we're taking a look at Guitar Hero's take on drums does it live up to its hype? Read on to find out. With both of the major music game franchises taking two distinctly different approaches to the drum kit controller and both being supported interchangeably, it's important to kit that suits you best.

In either case, however, its important to have your kit set up just the way you like it. Percussionists are picky-even the ones playing on a plastic set in their living rooms in sync to "notes" displayed on their TVs.
